There will be a free walking tour of the town taking place on every Saturday from April to October
Back by popular demand and over subscription the last time, this heritage walking tour will be taking place at 11AM every Saturday morning. If you are interested in finding out some of the fascinating history of Monaghan Town this tour is not to be missed! There will be plenty of old stories, interesting facts and loads of entertainment on the tour.
Tour Stops Include;
Peter’s Lake including Famine Memorial, Johnston and Madden Hall, Provincial Bank, Model School and discover who was Peter?
Mill Street – Post Office, first home of St Louis Order in Ireland, the best loved garden in the County and the beautiful Aviemore house.
Monaghan County Museum – award winning museum that tells the story of County Monaghan including The Watchmen, an exhibition about policing, free admission.
Market House – explore the history of County Monaghan’s dedicated Arts venue, Tourist office and home of the Harvest Time Blues…some very different uses for one of our oldest buildings.
Dawson Monument – uncover Monaghan links with the Crimean War, early banking and some architectural features unique to Monaghan Town.
Church Square – at this stop we look at the Courthouse aka Johnny Shorts Hotel, St Patrick’s Church, memorials and explore the Monaghan connection with Dracula and Oliver Twist.
Shambles River / Ulster Canal – this area was originally the meadows of the Castle that was originally in the centre of the new Monaghan Town. We also look at changes in waste management…
Old Cross Square – The Shambles of the town and home of the Market Cross.
The Diamond – we end our tour with a look at the beginnings of Monaghan Town, local media and the connection between the Rossmore Memorial and the Westenra Arms Hotel.
